Great Family Fun!
Utah Free Fishing Day - June 6, 2020
If you'd like to introduce someone to fishing — or you'd like to give fishing a try, but you don't have a fishing license — mark June 6 on your calendar. You don't need a fishing license to fish in the state that day.
You don't need a license to fish on June 6, but the remaining fishing rules in Utah will be in effect. The rules are available in the 2020 Utah Fishing Guidebook: https://go.usa.gov/xmwdG
While several COVID-19-related restrictions have recently been lifted, Utahns are still encouraged to practice social distancing while outdoors and should remain at least 6 feet away from others who may be fishing at the same waterbody. If a waterbody looks crowded and social distancing will be difficult to maintain, you should try visiting a different waterbody. You should also stay home if you are feeling sick.
Here’s a list of waterbodies throughout the state where you should have good fishing and be able to maintain social distancing while celebrating Free Fishing Day: https://go.usa.gov/xwCw3
Last but not least, here are some resources that will help beginners learn the basics of fishing before they head out: https://www.takemefishing.org/how-to-fish/
It's SUMMER . . . time for some FISHING!!
If you didn't make it for Free Fishing Day . . . no worries! Complete this Adventure on another day at another time, and earn a point towards some BIG PRIZES we'll be giving out throughout the summer.
Of course, the important thing is to spend time together as a family CREATING and CAPTURING Memories and building relationships.
Fishing is great fun for our little adventurers . . . for about a minute!! Okay-- maybe a few minutes. Keep in mind the attention span of your youngest adventurers and be sure to plan accordingly. Community fish ponds where the kids can see plenty of fish swimming around is a great option for the little ones.
Visiting an aquarium or the aquarium in a pet store is also an option, but you won't be fishing, of course!! That's okay. The point is to take time to CREATE and CAPTURE Memories, and be together as a family!
Ready to take fishing to the next level? Now it's time to cook up the fish that you caught! Get help from your parents, and enjoy a tasty meal!
Want to turn your fishing into a service project? Here are some ideas:
- Invite a child from a single mother family to go with you . . . both kids and Mom will appreciate it!
- Invite an elderly neighbor over for a cookout when you cook up your fish~
- Teach someone else to fish-- a child, or kids teach your parents!
What ideas do YOU have?
AND . . . earn 3 POINTS!! Woohoo! Fish never tasted so good!
It's also important to learn the rules of fishing before you head out. Take some time to LEARN THE RULES and you can earn ANOTHER POINT for this Adventure! You can find everything you need to know in your state's online Fishing Guide. Just do a quick search and you'll find it. If you can't find it, you can always check out the 2019 Utah Fishing Guidebook.
If you are doing this Adventure for the Discovery Family program be sure to include the whole family. You can either review the rules the together as a family OR have the kids review the rules and then share with the rest of the family. Whatever works best for your family.
