City Nature Challenge: The Wasatch
It's as Easy as Taking a Photo!
Nature is all around us in Northern Utah – and we need your help photographing it in April during The City Nature Challenge! The second step will take place while identifying what was found. This annual international effort encourages people to find and photograph plants and wildlife in cities around the globe using iNaturalist. We call our "city" The Wasatch (a combination of Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Salt Lake, Summit, Utah, Wasatch, and Weber Counties), and we are one of over 350 cities worldwide taking part.

Cities across the world compete to document their urban nature in the City Nature Challenge every year . You can join an international citizen science quest to record and share Utah's rich biodiversity.
Families are invited to catalog every living thing they can find on the free iNaturalist app. Go out and dig deep in your own backyard.
❏ What kind of dandelions are those?
❏ How many different types of grass spiders are in your garden?
❏ Is that a tanager in the tree?
❏ Are those flowers poking through the ground? What are they?
Download the free iNaturalist app to your mobile device
Take photos to make observations of wild plants and animals in your backyard, a park, the foothills - anywhere you find nature
Upload your photos to iNaturalist
Learn more as the iNaturalist community helps identify your observations
This is a great opportunity to let your kids do their science learning during the school closures while also getting involved in a community science project that is fun for all ages and families.
Of course, you can continue exploring well after the program is over!
Family Adventure
Let the kids take the lead on this project. Let them make the plan, download the app, and teach you how to do it. Be sure to point out all of the great things they do in the process.
Hang some of their favorite pictures from the project up around the house, or even let them create a collage from their pictures. This will reinforce that you enjoy their work.
You can participate in nature any time of the year. Find ongoing opportunities and challenges here.

Ready to take this Adventure to a new level?
Get a group of friends involved in the project in their own backyards. Work 'together' online to help each other identify what was found and tell each about your finds.
