The Discovery Family Adventures provide ideas, activities, and experiences to help build strong family relationships.
Our goal is to strengthen family relationships to help kids be and become their best selves
and to support parents in raising happy, successful, resilient kids in an exciting,
but sometimes turbulent and dangerous world.
Core Adventures are still available via the website for use by anyone that wants them, but everyone is encouraged to use the Discovery Hunt (Goosechase) App for hundreds of adventures throughout the year.

Family Adventure
GOAL: Create a network of little free libraries throughout the community
The ADVENTURE:
For this Adventure you will be building your own Little Free Library. You can learn more about this national movement here: https://littlefreelibrary.org/start/

📚 Let the kids help design their Little Free Library
📚 Let the kids help choose the books to put in it
📚 Use the time that you are building the little free library to talk about books that the kids have read and what they liked or didn't like about them. Encourage them to share alter endings or different twists to the story.
Here are the steps to take to build your Little Free Library:
📖 Identify a Location & Steward
First decide where you can legally and safely install the Library. The location should also have a lot of foot traffic and be highly visible to anyone nearby. Then identify at least one person to be the steward (steward = caretaker); this person promotes the Library and makes sure it is clean and inviting.
📖 Build the Library
There are lots of ideas and resources you can use to build your own Little Library. Here is one of the cleverest ideas I've seen: "When our microwave died we knew just what we wanted to do with it...Build a little lending library."
📖 Stock the Library
There are many ways to stock your new Little Free Library. Here are a few ideas:
📚You can choose books from your own library that you don't need any more,
📚You can hold a book drive,
📚You can invite each family in your neighborhood to donate one book for the Little Free Library
📚Check with your local library to see if they have any old books they are recycling
📚Check with a local bookstore to see if they would like to donate books for the Little Free Library
📚Get books through the Kelloggs Family Reward Program where you can earn up to 10 free books by buying foods you were probably planning to buy anyway.
📖 Register the Library ~ This is OPTIONAL!
This step is completely optional, and there is a cost if you choose to do it. If you choose to register you gain access to a network of support and benefits, including an official charter sign engraved with a unique charter number. One of the most popular benefits of registration is the option to add your Library to the world map.
📖 Hold a Grand Opening Ceremony and invite your neighbors to kick off the Library in style! Have a ribbon cutting, provide snacks and exchange books. Take lots of photos and CREATE and CAPTURE some great memories!
Pre-K Adventure
Tiny libraries are making a big difference neighborhoods all over the U.S.
CLICK HERE to find a Little Free Library in your area and then go for a walk around that area with your little ones. Let your child take a break at the Little Free Library and read a book together. Be prepared by having a book with you to exchange (and just in case they don't have a book your child's level).
Community Engagement Adventure
Organize a local campaign to notify others about the Little Free Libraries in their area, including their own.
📚 Get your community involved! Post a picture and the details in your local My Discovery Destination! group about your Little Free Library. Contact the local paper, radio and TV stations. Send out a press release. Tell your friends, family and neighbors in-person. Use social media to engage your community with the Library.
📚 Organize a book drive to help supply books for Little Free Libraries in your area. Be sure to use the book drive as an opportunity to also educate about the Little Free Library movement and to promote those in your local area. You can also combine this with the Super Service Challenge Adventure.
📚 Create a map showing all of the Little Free Libraries in your area and distribute it around your community. Better yet, distribute it digitally.
